The 5 best carpenters in London with workmanship you can trust

A carpenter who actually shows up, does quality work, and doesn’t leave your hallways looking like a sawdust tornado hit. Well, that’s the dream. And in London, it’s actually not that hard to reach that dream.

The city is home to a diverse range of talented carpenters who offer various services and finish them well and clean. Here, you can find bespoke furniture makers and even restoration experts.

Whether you’re planning a full kitchen overhaul or just need some shelving that will not collapse under your houseplants, I’ve done the research.

I talked to homeowners and even reached out to the carpenters themselves to find the best carpenters in London. Check them out here!

Solid Carpentry is one of the businesses on my list that has been operating for a relatively long time. I’m impressed that they maintained their good reputation over the past decade.

Another impressive thing about them is that they create secret rooms. Installing hidden spaces in households is their speciality, which they take pride in. They can do hidden bookcases, home cinema, and even a home office.

Their bespoke services are great as well. They can install custom-built bookcases, shelves, and many more. With years of experience, you can guarantee they can customise any furniture you can think of.

I also appreciate their property maintenance services. They repair old furniture as well, which I find really valuable since not all of us want to replace our pieces.

I also really like that they charge a reasonable price for their site visits. For £90, they can do an initial consultation on-site to assess the problems accurately.

However, their services are comparatively more pricey than other companies on my list. You may spend thousands of pounds on just a small piece of furniture.

Pros

  • 10+ years in business
  • Operates in the Greater London area
  • Offers bespoke services
  • Can create secret rooms
  • Offers maintenance services
  • Offers kitchen fitting services
  • Conducts site visits
  • Offers free initial consultation
  • Has an extensive portfolio

Cons

  • Relatively expensive

They did an excellent job

“We have a difficult to make use of small boiler room in our flat. In need of more storage space we got in touch with Solid Carpentry. They did such an excellent job from start to finish. We can now finally store all of our luggage and random things and the room actually feels bigger now. Well done on getting the shelves fitted in such small awkward spaces. And thank you for your excellent consultation, always fast and helpful communication and superb work you did in the room. Can highly recommend Dimitriy and team to anyone who needs a custom job done.”

-Kerstin Reichert, Google Review

I’d definitely recommend them

“I recently worked with Dimitry and Solid Carpentry to have a built -in wardrobe fitted in my bedroom so I could have more storage space. Dimitry was excellent right from the start – polite, up front about costs, arriving on time, giving me advice and keeping me updated on the job. I gave him a photo to work from and he made the wardrobe look just like it! It was also a really awkward space, the room is slightly on a slope but he made it fit just right. I’d definitely recommend Solid Carpentry to anyone, and I will definitely be using Solid Carpentry again if I need any more carpentry in the future.”

What caught my attention when checked out Thomas Carpentry was its wide coverage area. They serve residential and commercial spaces in eastern, northern, and southern London areas. They also operate in some locations in the Greater London area as well.

I was also impressed by their expertise in making various bespoke furniture. I’ve seen some customised wardrobes, kitchens, and cabinets, and the craftsmanship really stood out. They can even make alcove cabinets if you want something unique.

The amount of positive things I’ve heard about their custom pieces must be because of their one-to-one service. They always give each client a 100% focus, allowing them to really capture what the client wants.

I found them excellent at applying traditional methods too. They use classic joinery methods in every project they take. They also sometimes use the mortise and tenon joint method.

It’s also worth mentioning that they provide a long warranty for every project they finish. If you hire them, you have a guaranteed 10-year warranty on your property, which speaks volumes about the confidence they have in their work.

I’m just disappointed they don’t accept small projects. They only accept projects with a minimum value of £4,000.

Pros

  • Operates in several areas
  • Specialises in bespoke wardrobes, kitchens, cabinets
  • Proficient in using traditional methods
  • One-to-one service
  • Offers a long warranty
  • Offers design services
  • Offers free initial consultation
  • Has an extensive portfolio

Cons

  • Minimum value of £4,000 for projects

Couldn’t be happier with the results

“I recently hired Thomas Carpentry & Joinery to make and install two alcove wardrobes in our bedroom and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Our wardrobes are handmade and built to fit our space and needs perfectly. The quality of the finish is outstanding and has far exceeded my expectations – it was worth every penny! The whole process was brilliant – Ben was incredibly helpful in supporting us to get what we wanted, and he communicated with us throughout. The installation was quick, efficient and stress-free, and we weren’t left with any mess whatsoever. I can’t recommend Ben highly enough, and he’ll be the first person we contact for any carpentry needs we have in future.”

A true professional

“Ben provided a wholly professional service from planning through to the final fit of our 2 alcove wardrobes. What he delivered went beyond our expectations – in function and in look. He recommended a spray finish and wow, the finish feels and looks stunning. Ben is immensely talented, – his skill, pride and work ethic is evident in the quality of his work – we are so grateful to have found him. We absolutely recommend Thomas Carpentry & Joinery, it was a pleasure getting to know Ben and welcoming him and his colleague into our home. A true professional – thank you so much.”

What’s great about London Carpentry Solutions is their extensive custom-made furniture services. Some furniture they usually create includes fitted bedrooms, handmade doors, and radiator casings.

Their flooring services are great as well. Their team can install, repair, and refinish various floor coverings. They can help you whether you have a wood, tile, or carpet floor.

I also appreciate that they offer spray painting services. They have a complete range of colours and do colour matching as well. They use products like acid-catalyst, waterborne paint, and much more.

While researching about them, I also can’t ignore their bathroom fitting services. They are the only company on my list that offers these services. Other companies only offer kitchen fitting services.

I also love that customers have flat-pack furniture options. The team even assembles the furniture for you for free, which many of the customers I talked to really appreciate.

On the other hand, they just told me they operate within London but didn’t mention any specific area. London is quite big, so I think it’s better if they can tell which areas they usually operate in.

Pros

  • Offers custom-made furniture services
  • Offers flooring services
  • Offers spray painting services
  • Offers bathroom fitting services
  • Provides flat-pack furniture
  • Free initial consultation
  • Has an extensive portfolio

Cons

  • Unclear scope of service areas

Second to none

“I had Bobby from London Carpentry solutions help me with a number of bespoke furniture items with the latest being a multifunction desk. Bobby was fantastic from helping me resolve a design detail but also help me rationalise the design to achieve my budget. Once the details were agreed Bobby stuck to the agreed installation date, arriving exactly on time and I never got the impression he was in a rush to be somewhere else. The quality of the work went above and beyond my hopes (hopefully my armature photographs do his work justice) and his care and consideration was second to none. For these reasons I have no hesitation providing a recommendation.”

Everything you could ask for

“Bobby built and installed alcove cupboards for our living room. We couldn’t be happier with the results! We live in a Victorian property with very high ceilings and very uneven walls. The cupboards look like they’ve always been here (in the best possible way). They are faithful to the feel of the place, and look seamless despite how uneven the base Bobby had to work to was. Bobby was a delight from start to finish. Great worker. Very professional. On time, tidy, efficient – everything you could ask for. And a very reasonable price. We couldn’t recommend Bobby highly enough! Thank you Bobby”

I love that Premium Joinery also offers handyman services, such as curtain fitting and draft proofing, besides joinery and carpentry assistance. It makes it easy for customers to get many things done in one go.

I also love how they explain the process in detail, so you know what to expect. For example, they discuss each step of the process in their joinery services, from design to the actual installation.

What I appreciate most, though, is their availability. They can work outside their operating hours at a fair cost. On top of that, they can work upon request, regardless of whether on weekends or holidays.

However, their hourly rate services might cost you a lot of money if they don’t finish the job quickly. That’s why they always advise their clients to be ready for this possibility.

Pros

  • Relatively wide coverage area
  • Offers handyman services
  • Detailed process
  • Operates outside business hours
  • Operates upon request
  • Free initial consultation
  • Has an extensive portfolio

Cons

  • Potential for more expenditures

Much appreciated

“Peter bespoke carpenter and joiner. The attention to detail was second to none. He always checked in with us at every stage to ensure we were happy. Adrian is a very professional, reliable and friendly person and we would highly recommend him. We would not hesitate to have him back in future. Thanks for all the work you have done to my house – all unless from our bedroom drawers / under stairs unit / corner kitchen units / garden work / brand new kitchen / all out shelves – much appreciated! Tony :)”

-Tona Ha, Google Review

The best carpenter we’ve ever had

“10 out of 10 for workmanship, speed and tidiness, as well as being so helpful and friendly. After talking to us on the day, Peter went above and beyond to adapt the original plan to ensure his work would be as valuable as possible. In place of the full banister replacement quoted for, he fitted new baserails and spindles instead, fitted new skirting in the dining room, and fitted new shelves in a bedroom cupboard. 3 jobs in 1! We’re absolutely delighted. He was so quick and accurate, and he cleaned up all the dust/wood shavings perfectly during and afterwards so there was no mess at all. It was like magic. I’d definitely recommend calling if you’re looking for a carpenter as Peter is easily the best tradesperson we’ve ever had.”

London Multi Trade is another company on my list that has been serving people for several years. They have been creating furniture for over two decades.

One of the impressive things is that they can take on a full home renovation project. They can plan and design based on your preferences and construct your dream home.

Another unique service they offer is landscaping. Their gardening services include garden maintenance, tree care, and lawn care.

I also appreciate their plastering services. They can apply plaster to various types of walls, ceilings, and other structures. They also do decorative plasterwork at a reasonable cost.

Another small but great thing I noticed is that they fully operate six days a week. This means you can have reliable carpenters who are reachable almost every day.

The only downside I noticed about them is that they don’t have a portfolio gallery. This might discourage some people from hiring them as they don’t have proof of excellent work. But remember, they will not be included in my top list if their service is trash.

Pros

  • 20+ years in business
  • Does renovations
  • Offers landscaping services
  • Offers plastering services
  • Offers tile installation services
  • Fully operates six days a week
  • Free initial consultation

Cons

  • Doesn’t have an extensive portfolio

Will never hesitate to hire them again

“We’ve used Andy twice. The first time was to build some oakwood floor to ceiling floating shelves throughout our living room and later to build a large bespoke fitted wardrobe and chest of drawers unit in the bedroom. The work he did on both occasion was to the highest of standards and was exactly what we wanted. The floating shelves, stacked with loads of heavy books are the main feature of our living room and all our guests regularly comment on them. They are still holding firmly all these years later. Andy is meticulous in his work, highly reliable and very personable. He comes highly recommended and we will not hesitate to use him again.”

-James O, Google Review

Andy was brilliant and professional

“Andy was brilliant. He was very professional, and easy to get on with. He completed a really difficult job of repairing and painting double doors that opened onto the garden. The doors were in a really bad way and I had arranged to have them replaced however the company I was attempting to use were hopeless. After two years of being told ‘soon, soon’. I decided to get a quote for repairing and painting them. I’m so glad I did. Andy did a great job and the doors look as good as new Thankyou again Andy. Juliet”
