When you’re dealing with a medical mistake, you’re dealing with trust gone wrong. One minute, you’re putting your life in someone’s hands. Next, you’re wondering what went wrong.
And when they do, you’ll quickly learn that finding a good medical malpractice lawyer is crucial. You need someone who knows the system, isn’t afraid to take on the big guys, and can help you actually win the case as you deserve.
After reading through countless case studies and interviewing clients through a confidential assessment system, we found London’s best medical negligence lawyers.
Their success rates alone spoke to us, but you’ll find other factors here that make them among the best.
How much does it cost to hire a medical malpractice lawyer in London?
The cost of hiring a medical malpractice lawyer in London ranges from $200 to $600 per hour. However, most lawyers operate on a “no win, no fee” basis. This means that the client only pays if the claim succeeds, with fees usually deducted from the compensation or recovered from the opposing party.
How we chose the best medical malpractice lawyers in London
- Experience and track record: We looked into how long each law firm had been practicing. We also evaluated their history of successful cases, settlements, and trial experience.
- Legal approach and strategy: We evaluated each law firm’s approach to handling claims, from investigation to litigation. We favoured those who balanced assertiveness with empathy in their representation.
- Accessibility and availability: We checked how easy it was to reach lawyers for consultations, follow-ups, and urgent matters. Flexible communication through phone, email, and virtual meetings was considered.
- Cost structure: We considered fee transparency, including whether the firms operated on a “no win, no fee” basis. Those that offered fair and clear rates without hidden charges and a flexible payment structure were considered.
1. Fieldfisher

Location: Fieldfisher, Riverbank House, 2 Swan Ln
Contact: +44 330 460 7000
Opening Hours: Thursday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Fieldfisher is one of the UK’s top firms for medical negligence, personal injury, and asbestos claims. As evidence of their credibility, the firm is ranked top-tier by Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners.
We’re impressed by their history of successful outcomes. They’ve achieved record damages of over £200 million in compensation in the last year alone.
We can say they’re able to achieve this with their deep expertise in complex cases. This includes birth injury, misdiagnosis, and surgical errors.
When managing cases, clients revealed that the team explains the process clearly. They outline potential outcomes and manage expectations realistically. We love this more honest and grounded approach, rather than false promises.
They operate in a no-win, no-fee funding system too. This makes their services accessible without major financial risks for the client.
Plus, with offices in London, Manchester, and Birmingham, they’re able to extend their services to key areas.
The law firm is primarily focused on serious and high-value cases, which may not suit minor claims. In-demand lawyers are naturally difficult to book, as well, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Sensitive and diligent
“Excellent. I cannot fault the team handling my case, they were sensitive and diligent. The lead solicitor. Claire Horton was caring and we never felt anonymous. At all times, this difficult and complicated medical negligence case was approached with care and the highest standards. Claire has a detailed and forensic understanding of the complexities involved in such cases.”

Worked tirelessly to secure a fantastic settlement
“I am in total respect of all the diligent hard work provided by a Mr Will Jones and his Years and years of support. He has worked tirelessly to secure a fantastic settlement for my daughters’ mis diagnosed DDH claim. Through the stresses of a medical negligence claim and the surgery experienced throughout those years Mr Will Jones provided the calm, caring and reassuring clarity needed when, as a parent you feel rather overwhelmed. I can’t thank him enough for listening and fighting my daughters’ case to the end.”

2. Osbornes Law Solicitors

Location: Livery House, 9 Pratt St.
Contact: +44 20 7485 8811
Opening Hours: Thursday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Osbornes Law has been operating for 50 years, growing from a two-partner firm to a large private client firm in London. Their range of services is impressive, covering personal injury, family law, and more.
When it comes to medical negligence, we find them well-suited for handling high-value, complex cases. They’ve handled cases involving misdiagnosis, surgical injuries, and wrongful birth claims.
They even cater to niche cases involving cauda equina syndrome.
The no-win, no-fee arrangement is a big win for clients who want to reduce financial risk in a difficult legal process. Beyond financial accessibility, they also have 2 physical locations (Camden and Hampstead), providing convenience to local clients.
Their approach to cases is outstanding, in our opinion. Hearing stories from clients, we can infer that they’re empathetic – actually listening to concerns rather than being intimidating with legal jargon. The overall demeanour is friendly.
The only things we wish to see improvements in are their phone and email responses. When one of our team members tried it, the call was left unanswered. Fortunately, for ongoing cases, the communication is fast and seamless.
Took the time to listen

3. Thompsons Solicitors

Location: 8, 8-10 Old Jewry,
Contact: +44 20 8596 7700
Opening Hours: Thursday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Established in 1921, Thompsons Solicitors has a proven legacy in advocating for injured individuals and workers. Their long history suggests reliability, which is one of the major things we’re looking for in a firm.
For medical negligence cases, they handle a wide range of cases. They handle everything, from misdiagnoses and surgical errors to birth injuries and catastrophic medical mistakes.
We love the way they approach cases, as it helps reduce client anxiety. They explain each process step-by-step, ensuring clients have a solid idea of what to expect and what to do next.
This allowed them to deliver a strong track record of results, with significant compensation awards to clients. They work with victims of high-profile medical malpractice cases too, including the Ian Paterson surgeon scandal.
Another thing that got our attention is that they refuse to act for insurance companies or defendants. They exclusively represent the injured, which is a great sign of high work ethics.
There were only a few reports of delays in cases where external medical experts were needed to support claims. Other than this, everything else was up to par.
Simple and effective communication
“Outstanding Service. They will keep you up to date. They give you all the possibilities / reasons / suggestion . The communication is simple but very effective. The staff is very knowledgeable and very polite. They have successfully done my injury claim.”
– Teddy Tan (Ted), Google Review
Patient and helpful throughout
“My case started just over 3 years ago, I have never had the need for solicitors until now. Although I have had quite a few solicitors during this time, Rachel Hart I think has been with me for the latter and most part. She has been amazing. When I was unsure of things, procedures etc, she took the time to explain things (legal jargon), in a language that I could understand. They have been patient and helpful throughout my ordeal. It has now come to an end and agreement has been made. It’s taken a long 3 years for me, but it’s now at an end, thanks to Thompsons Solicitors”

4. Slater and Gordon Lawyers

Location: 1st Floor, 22 Chancery Ln
Contact: +44 20 7998 6221
Opening Hours: Thursday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Slater and Gordon’s medical negligence team has hundreds of years of combined expertise. They cover a wide range of comprehensive services, including amputation, brain injury, and cancer misdiagnosis.
We like that they offer conditional fee agreements, ensuring clients don’t bear legal costs if their claim is unsuccessful.
Their approach is strong with a good level of client involvement. Clients are kept informed every step of the way, even through lengthy, demanding cases. Emotional support is also present, with clients noting that they felt “heard and respected.”
To craft a more robust representation, the law firm has in-house medical experts for accurate case evaluations. This helps strengthen each claim’s evidence base, resulting in successful outcomes.
Speaking of which, it’s impressive that the results are consistent across different solicitors. It’s just the level of dependability we’re looking for.
It’s important to take note, however, that the firm has occasional feedback for slow progress, usually involving complex cases. For clients who have time-sensitive claims, they may not be the best choice for the matter.
Led to a satisfactory conclusion
“I am very happy with the way my case was handled by Slater & Gordon and would certainly recommend them to anyone who require a lawyer for medical negligence/personal injury. Very professional, kept me updated at all times. Host lawyer (Laura Preston) and barrister (Heidi) on my case was exceptional, which led to a satisfactory conclusion”
– Veronica Blackwood, Google Review

5. Hodge Jones & Allen

Location: 180 N Gower St
Contact: +44 330 818 4174
Opening Hours: Thursday – Friday: 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM
HJA has a long-standing reputation for handling complex medical negligence claims, including high-value cases like birth injuries, surgical errors, and delayed diagnosis.
Their legal team is impressive, to say the least, with many solicitors having medical backgrounds themselves. This gives them a rare dual insight into the processes, helping make a more robust representation.
We like that they primarily operate in a conditional fee agreement, so clients don’t pay unless they win. They also assist clients in obtaining legal aid for qualifying cases, usually for those involving severe birth injuries.
According to clients, the lawyers are supportive and empathetic, extending patience to really understand the client’s medical needs. Explanations in funding, claim stages, and potential outcomes are all clear and realistically laid out.
The only downside we can highlight is that the quality of services can be inconsistent across solicitors. A few clients reported that some of the lawyers they worked with were abrupt, indifferent, or just downright unhelpful.
Always kept clients in the loop
“I am really grateful for Daniel Denton and the team at HJA for the way they dealt with my case. Daniel is approachable, clear and always kept me in the loop, which gave me a lot of reassurance. Everything was handled with care and professionalism, I am very pleased with the result. I’d happily recommend Daniel and HJA to anyone who is looking for support with a legal issue! I am truly grateful, thank you so much.”
