The 5 best memory care homes in London for dementia care

When my grandma was diagnosed with dementia, we faced one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever had to make: finding the right memory care home in London.

We didn’t just want a place that could meet her medical needs. We wanted a place that felt safe and familiar, where the staff truly understood the emotional weight of memory loss and treated her with real compassion.

After weeks of research and a few tours, a few homes stood out to us for all the right reasons. They offered the kind of care we were hoping for: professional, patient, and kind.

If you and your family are going through a similar journey, I hope this list helps. These are the memory care homes in London that truly made a lasting impression on us.

How much does it cost to admit someone to a memory care home in London?

Admitting someone with dementia to a memory care home in London typically costs £1,500 to £2,000 per week, depending on the level of care required, the specific home, and any additional services needed.

How we chose the best memory care homes in London

  • Quality of service: We opted for care homes with happy patients and clients. We verified this by visiting the care homes to see the patients myself and interviewing their loved ones.
  • Customer support: All homes on this list have 24/7 nurses and contact centres to assist not only the patients but also their loved ones.
  • Environment: We searched for care homes that have welcoming and homey surroundings, which can have a positive impact on patients’ well-being.
  • Facilities: All care homes on this list offer a range of communal areas where patients can enjoy and socialise with one another, such as a library, a cinema, and more.

With over 40 years of experience, Excelcare’s chairman is a veteran in organising care homes. He started this business with his father, which I find both impressive and inspiring.

Their Wesport care home staff earned so much praise during the interviews we’ve conducted with the patients’ relatives. Several people told us that they always go above and beyond to provide outstanding care and hospitality.

Their person-centred approach in providing various kinds of dementia care is a huge plus. We love that they tailor their support based on the patient’s experiences and values.

Their dementia care is tailored for people with mild to moderate dementia, including Alzheimer’s. What’s great is they prioritise family involvement and community connections to give their patients a better quality of life while under their care.

The only problem we noticed during our visit was that they don’t have a parking area. You need to find a vacant parking space in the street, which is inconvenient for visitors.

Pros

  • 40+ years in business
  • Person-centred approach
  • Offers residential, nursing, and respite care
  • Uplifting environment
  • Bedrooms with en-suite facilities and garden views
  • Clean communal facilities
  • Therapeutic programs
  • Pet-friendly

Cons

  • No parking area

More than just a care facility

“Westport Care Home is far more than just a care facility—it’s a place where compassion lives and genuine care is felt every day. From the moment you walk through the door, you’re met with a sense of warmth and positivity that sets the tone for everything that follows. It’s immediately clear that this is a home where residents are treated with true respect, kindness, and thoughtful attention to their individual needs. The staff are outstanding—not only highly professional, but also deeply compassionate and sincerely dedicated to the people they support. They don’t simply carry out their duties—they form meaningful, human connections that bring comfort and joy to residents’ daily lives. What truly sets Westport apart is the sense of belonging and community it fosters. It’s a welcoming, uplifting environment where well-being is a priority and every detail is handled with care. For anyone seeking a place where their loved one will be genuinely valued and well cared for, Westport Care Home is an exceptional choice.”

What really stood out about Springdene Care Homes is its longevity, providing assistance to families for more than 50 years. Their longevity is a strong testament to the quality of their service.

We appreciated the friendly atmosphere the place has during my visit. All staff and even the patients that we passed by smiled at us. A place like this will surely put your loved one in a good mood every day.

Many of the people that we interviewed also appreciated the proactive care their family member receives from the staff. They love that the staff helps them navigate the healthcare system and schedule appointments.

Their residential dementia care is tailored for much older people, 80 years old and above, with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We appreciate their focus on psychological and physical stimulation for a longer and happier life for their patients.

However, they don’t offer services outside dementia care, such as end-of-life care and other hospice care. It’s not a problem if you’re only looking for dementia care, though.

Pros

  • 50+ years in business
  • Compassionate, communicative staff
  • Proactive care
  • Residential and respite dementia care
  • Homey and friendly environment
  • Spacious bedrooms with en-suite facilities
  • Well-maintained communal facilities

Cons

  • Relatively limited service

We’re very happy with the service

“My mum has been a resident at Spring Grove for 1 year. We are very happy with the care she receives. It is not only professional but also caring and respectful. We have had some tough times over the year as she has Alzeheimers but carers and managers have regularly communicated with us and gone out of their way to help manage her needs. She has fantastic support from the mental health team. Her room is large and cleaned regularly. Despite being at the front on a main road, it is not noisy and provides a nice buzz of people to watch. There are nice communal areas, outside space, and so many activities both physically and mentally stimulating. Staff always smile. Always. As a doctor I have worked with many care homes (not in London) and never have I ever been in one so welcoming and warm. Myself and my brothers are very grateful that Spring Grove had space for my mum when we had to make that difficult decision. We haven’t looked back.”

An experience of life indeed

“Visited last week only to defy my doubts about the real care they take. I was not only astonished but also overwhelmed with the kind of attention the team in the care home gives the inmates/residents. The affection bestowed upon them brought tears to my eyes. The patience exercised and the smile thrown at the residents are exceptional. An experience of life indeed.”

We were very impressed with the facilities of Signature at Hendon Hall during our visit. Situated in a former hotel, it has a beautiful cinema, well-maintained gardens, and more. Imagine the entertainment your loved one will have here with these amenities.

We also love their person-centred approach in looking after their patients. They prioritise each patient’s unique needs, preferences, and goals above all else. This guarantees personalised care for your beloved family member.

Their residential dementia care encourages personalisation of patients’ living space and the one we love most, independence. They’re the ideal home if your loved one loves to have quality time with themselves, with just enough interaction with the home’s staff.

Additionally, their sympathetic staff captured the hearts of the people that we interviewed. They told us that they witnessed how the personnel at Signature value what they and their sick loved one feel.

However, not all homes are perfect. There were still people we interviewed who shared their disappointments with some of the unfriendly staff.

Pros

  • Person-centred approach
  • Residential and respite dementia care
  • Spacious private apartments
  • Exquisite communal facilities
  • Pet-friendly

Cons

  • Some unfriendly staff

The facilities are wonderful

“My mum has dementia and Alzheimer’s and we took the difficult decision to move her into residential care. Naturally shy and reserved as well as fiercely independent we had a tricky start but , mum has benefitted so much from the kind and caring staff. In particular Rose who looks after my mum with such kindness and good humour , Suzanne makes sure she eats well by gently encouraging her with what she knows mum will find appetising and Gina puts on varied activities everyday bringing her wonderful warmth, sense of fun and great humour. it’s plain to see how much the residents love her and I know that if it wasn’t for Gina my mum wouldn’t be as settled and happy as she’s become . The facilities are wonderful, the best of any care home I’ve visited but it’s the staff who really make it a cut above anywhere else .”

I was truly impressed

“As a home move manager, I was truly impressed by Signature Hendon Hall. I have visited many care homes around North London, and this one stood out for its exceptionally warm and welcoming atmosphere. Seeing the residents socialising and playing bridge together was heartwarming. The care home would be such a lovely place to live. Julie the client liaison manager, were incredibly warm and professional, taking the time to give me a comprehensive tour. I highly recommend Signature Hendon Hall to anyone considering a care home for their loved ones.”

Most of the people we spoke to commend TLC Care for always preparing nutritious vegetarian meals for their loved ones. It’s reassuring for them that their family members still eat healthy foods even when they can’t cook for them.

We appreciate how they value spirituality. We saw this during our visit to their magnificent temple. This is great for religious patients because it keeps them close to the Almighty through hard times, even when their families are not around.

They care for all stages of dementia, promoting self-esteem and confidence in a safe, home-like environment. They focus on building personal relationships with patients so they feel like they have valuable companions even when their families are not around.

Many people we interviewed love how kind the staff are every time they visit. One man even told us that he appreciates how they take care of his mum like she’s their own mother.

The minor problem we noticed is that they have limited parking spaces. This is bad when many people visit on the same day.

Pros

  • Kind, professional team
  • Values spirituality
  • Residential dementia care
  • Respite dementia care
  • Homey environment
  • Relaxing atmosphere
  • Private rooms with en-suite facilities
  • Exquisite communal facilities
  • Well-praised vegetarian meals

Cons

  • Limited parking spaces

Like an upscale hotel with carers

“This place is more like an upscale hotel with carers than a care home. It is impeccably decorated, each patient room has an en suite with well thought out shower with all necessary supports. The beds are comfy, the food is delicious, there’s a good ratio of staff to residents, the layout is well designed, and it’s very friendly. The place even has a cinema, a small shop, and a beauty salon on the premises, as well as a lovely garden with fish pond. The residents seem healthy and well cared for and the management have been excellent with addressing any needs.”

– Janet Deci Bell, Google Review

Very professional and kind to visitors

“We visited this home and were very impressed with the way the service is delivered. Patients are in an environment that seems like home, their home. They have catered for languages so that communication is effective and patients voices are heard. Families appear as happy as the patients. Culturally it’s perfect for the residents. Prayer place ( temple), dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and reception entrance are very welcoming and beautiful. Staff are amazing how they speak to patients as if they are family to reassure and the management team very professional and kind to visitors. We were treated with great respect and care.”

5. Hallmark Luxury Care Homes – Kew House

Business hours: Open 24 hours

Website

We love Hallmark Luxury Care Homes’ relationship-centred approach. They don’t just focus on the patient but also on the relatives to help them form a strong bond. We find this very helpful for those with family problems.

Another thing we love is the clean communal facilities during my visit. It’s super relaxing for both patients and visitors to have access to these kinds of areas. Some amenities they have are a cafe, a library, and a salon.

During visits, it’s very clear that the care providers try to foster meaningful relationships and create a supportive environment. They really do try to follow the “Six Senses” framework, which we appreciate.

For those unfamiliar with it, the framework highlights the importance of giving dementia patients a sense of purpose, achievement, and significance. It also ensures patients feel secure, belong, and are supported by continuity in their care.

Most of the patients’ relatives we spoke to backed up our observations, with many praising the care providers’ compassion. They appreciate the timely updates about the welfare of their loved ones.

That said, their services are comparatively more expensive than most care homes on this list. But with the quality of assistance they offer, it’s not a bad deal.

Pros

  • 20+ years in business
  • Compassionate, responsive team
  • Relationship-centred approach
  • Residential dementia care
  • Respite dementia care
  • Welcoming environment
  • Family atmosphere
  • Clean communal facilities
  • Pet-friendly

Cons

  • Relatively expensive

Truly exceptional

“Kew House is exceptional. From the initial contact, to the tirelessly dedicated and amazingly supportive Customer Relationship Manager who helped ease my anxieties of transitioning mum into care, to the 24/7 friendly and compassionate care from the team. Kew House has made a difficult confronting time into a smooth informative process where their focus on care for mum was paramount. Mum has been delighted with the excellent food, beautiful environment and responsive and gently sensitive carers and nurses. As I live overseas, it has been a huge relief to know mum is happy and she feels in safe, understanding, and well-trained attentive hands. The team’s regular updates have been wonderfully reassuring. Kew House has outstanding standards of excellence and place valuing and caring for their residents as a clear fundamental principle. Thank you very much Kew House team.”

– Karen Robinson, Google Review

Highly recommended

“Kew House has been a fantastic home for my mother since the end of February 2024. From the minute I contacted Kew House, the staff were so welcoming, helpful and supportive. The move-in was smooth and since then Mum has been looked after so well. She is always up and about, involved in activities which are well geared towards her needs and interests. The staff are friendly and enthusiastic, keeping me posted with photos and updates on how Mum is and what she’s up to. My mother is very happy and she feels safe and secure. Any health issues are dealt with quickly. I would highly recommend Kew House!”
