The 5 best psychotherapists in London worth booking today

Ever tried booking a psychotherapist in London? Until you actually try to do it, it’s never that simple. There are endless directories, vague bios, and reviews that don’t tell you what the sessions are really like.

The last thing you need is to gamble on the wrong therapist. So, we set out to interview current and former clients and review approaches and outcomes. We focused on trust and consistency to find clinics that genuinely support their clients.

For any mental health struggles, here are names to keep in mind.

How much does it cost to see a psychotherapist in London?

The cost of seeing a psychotherapist in London ranges from £80 to £180 per session. Rates vary depending on the format and the therapist’s experience.

How we chose the best psychotherapists in London

  • Experience and areas of expertise: We examined the length and depth of each therapist’s clinical experience across a range of mental health concerns.
  • Approaches and treatment planning: We looked into the therapeutic models used (CBT, integrative therapy, etc.). We also took note of how therapists tailored treatment plans for clients.
  • Accessibility and availability: We reviewed how easy it was to access each psychotherapist, including appointment availability, session formats, and London locations.
  • Fees and pricing structure: We assessed how clearly therapists communicated their fees, session lengths, and any additional fees.

We liked KlearMinds for their comprehensive range of services. Their key approaches include psychotherapy, counselling, and CBT.

The clinic is led by founder Maggue Morrow, and her and her team’s experience alone reassured us. Between clinical directors and therapists, they have between 8 and over 35 years of experience.

While speaking with clients, we noted multiple instances of long-lasting transformations. There are also strong notes for significantly improved mental health.

Therapists are also described as warm, insightful, and honest. Through counselling, they maintain a safe environment for initially anxious and sceptical clients.

Beyond results, the admin experience is also solid. Their therapist-client matching is seamless and accurate. Plus, they offer free telephone consultations and personalised recommendations from the outset.

Fees may be higher than average, though not excessively high. It’s important to note, though, that they have limited acceptance of certain insurance providers.

Senior therapists also have limited availability at times.

Pros

  • Decades of clinical experience
  • Wide range of specialisations
  • Records of long-term change
  • Excellent therapist matching process
  • Central London locations

Cons

  • Relatively higher fees
  • Limited acceptance of insurers

Supportive, insightful, and easy to talk to

“I had therapy sessions with Maggie every other week for six months and they we invaluable. Maggie was amazing — supportive, insightful, and easy to talk to. Each session gave me tools and perspectives that I still reflect on today, long after our sessions ended. The work we did together continues to help me navigate challenges more effectively. If I ever felt I needed support again, I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to Maggie.”

Made clients feel safe

“Carmen was amazing. I’m incredibly grateful for all of the work she has done with me. When I first came to her, I was feeling very overwhelmed and anxious but she made me feel completely safe and understood from the start. Her warmth, insight, and guidance helped me find confidence and calm in many situations I’ve been faced with since beginning with her. Working with her has been transformative and I couldn’t thank her enough.”

Harley Therapy offers a wide range of therapy services, including counselling, psychiatry, and psychological assessments.

We find this firm a good choice for those who want access to highly experienced clinicians. Harley connects clients with therapists who have 10 to 40 years of professional experience.

The best part is that they’re accredited, insured, and carefully vetted for private practice.

Their expertise and experience are reflected in the quality of their work. According to the clients we interviewed, changes were life-changing and long-lasting.

Key improvements usually involve areas of emotional regulation, self-awareness, and relationships.

Communication within therapy sessions also earned our favour. We gathered multiple mentions of them being close listeners while ensuring a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Customer service and admin are also efficient, responsive, and discreet. With all these factors, we have nothing more to ask for in this area.

Like most clinics, however, they’re not perfect. Fees are higher than most, even for relatively simple assessments.

Experience with certain therapists also isn’t as stellar as most.

Pros

  • Wide range of services
  • Highly experienced clinicians
  • Strong track record
  • Carefully vetted therapists
  • Offers a first-session guarantee
  • Efficient and responsive
  • Multiple locations

Cons

  • High fees
  • Inconsistent experience depending on the clinician

Therapy in London offers a wide range of psychotherapy and counselling services. They also offer family therapy, online therapy, and career coaching.

We like this range of offerings as it allows clients to address both emotional and practical life changes under one clinic.

Client feedback about their approaches is also glowing. In particular, we found many highlights of improvements in anxiety, depression, and trauma.

During interviews, clients highlighted lasting change over months and years.

Therapy sessions are conducted in a calm environment. We appreciate how this quickly made the clients feel at ease, especially since most first-timers are anxious.

Rates, while premium for most clients, offer good value for money. Even those who said it’s expensive say that the consistent support made the cost worthwhile.

It may just be difficult to secure a first appointment, considering their team of therapists is limited per location.

Contacting them online also isn’t the most straightforward we’ve encountered for simply general inquiries.

  • Practical, action-oriented therapy
  • Safe and calm environment
  • Strong focus on accountability
  • Suitable for a wide range of needs
  • In-person and online therapy

Cons

  • Relatively high rates
  • Limited online options for contact

– Ethan Shaw, Google Review

Extremely thoughtful and patient

“I highly recommend Philip to anyone seeking anything from career coaching, to business development, to managing various life-challenges. He is extremely thoughtful and patient in his approach but always honest. Philip genuinely cares about his clients and I am grateful to have gotten to work with him.”

Dr McCarthy provides long-term psychotherapy for individuals and couples. The fact that many clients attend consistently for 12 to 24 months also assured us of their dedicated intervention.

She demonstrated extensive experience by successfully supporting clients with complex and overlapping issues. They can assist with issues such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

According to clients, the therapeutic approach is structured with a good balance of challenge. The strategy is warm, while also being directly confrontational with unhelpful thinking patterns.

We also liked that they emphasise practical tools and real-world applications. They equip clients with coping strategies, reflective techniques, and mindfulness practices.

In addition to the effective therapies, communication is also frequently highlighted as a strength. They reply fast to initial inquiries, and appointment availability is pretty flexible.

The only issues we encountered involved a late arrival during an appointment. Meeting confirmations would’ve helped ease any uncertainties with appointments.

Pros

  • Extensive experience with long-term challenges
  • Strong results-focused approach
  • Combines warmth with accountability
  • Provides practical tools
  • Suitable for individuals and couples
  • Best for long-term therapy

Cons

  • Lacks meeting confirmations

The quality of therapeutic work is also strong. We interviewed multiple clients, and we noted repeated mentions of compassionate care and meaningful psychological progress.

The methods earned our favour as they’re able to deal with a broad spectrum of mental health concerns. The majority of their clients come to them for anxiety, depression, trauma, and PTSD.

The administrative support is also strong. The therapist-matching process is fast and supported by in-room introduction videos.
