Pros

  • Specialises in both paediatric and adult allergies
  • Five locations across the city
  • Quick in diagnosing allergies
  • Extensive allergy testing
  • Cutting-edge modern allergy testing techniques

Cons

  • Doesn’t easily accept clients with no insurance
  • Cost of new patient appointment is pricey

Led by two clinical experts in the fields of paediatric and adult allergy, Allergy London prides delivers quality care to allergy sufferers. Their practice specialises in both paediatric and adult allergies, so it’s safe to say they could easily be your family’s on-call allergists.

They’re easily accessible to clients needing immediate care as they have five locations throughout the city. That’s why their availability isn’t a problem for the majority of their patients, as what’s reflected in the reviews.

Now, the allergy conditions they treat are pretty much the same ones that allergists treat on a regular basis: asthma, eczema, hay fever, and food allergies. What drew us in was the extensive allergy testing they provide.

Speaking of which, we discovered that they utilise a range of modern allergy testing techniques. Clients can expect to get tested through skin prick tests, molecular diagnostics, blood tests, breathing tests, and oral provocation testing.

Most of their clients also attested to the overall smoothness of the process they provide, from consultation to treatment of such diagnostics. In fact, they emphasise the quick results their allergists provide, as in many cases, they can diagnose in a single consultation.

Unfortunately, for insurance purposes, Allergy London doesn’t accept patients without a referral from a general practitioner or another consultant. They can, however, entertain self-paying patients, but they must go through an extensive consultation process.

Pros

  • Over 20 years in the field
  • Impressive credentials
  • Involved with several well-known UK allergy charities
  • Consultation process includes basic allergy diagnostic tests and a comprehensive allergy profile
  • Online consultation available

Cons

  • Pricey initial consultation

The Surrey Allergy Clinic by Dr. Adrian Morris has been testing, diagnosing, and treating a broad spectrum of allergies for over 20 years. Throughout these years, he has earned the trust of his patients, especially those who have had him as their general allergist for years.

Before we get to how things work in the clinic, let’s quickly brief you on his overwhelming credentials. For instance, he has postgraduate diplomas in allergy, dermatology, family practice, and paediatrics, which explains why most of his patients are children.

He is also involved with several well-known UK allergy charities, the majority of which provide financial assistance to children and adults suffering from allergies. These all just give us an impression of how he really has his heart in his profession.

On another note, they have received mixed reviews for their services, with the majority of them centred on the initial consultation. Clients appreciate how this stage is jam-packed with services, such as basic allergy diagnostic tests and the creation of a comprehensive allergy profile.

However, some of them complain that the process is severely overpriced, not to mention the roughly similar fees for their follow-ups. They do, however, offer a less expensive online consultation that does not include allergy testing, which is still quite unsatisfactory.

Lastly, we recommend that you visit their site before making an appointment as they’ve listed insurance that doesn’t cover the consultation fee, just to keep you posted. Anyway, their expertise still exceeded our expectations, so they remain significant in this regard.

Pros

  • Specialises in diagnosing and treating skin allergies
  • Caters to existing allergy diagnosis and treatment
  • Clients can have access to private clinic
  • Easy booking of appointment online
  • Reasonably priced
  • Accepts all the main private healthcare insurance companies

Cons

  • Issues about their secretarial team’s attitude

Dr. David Orton of London Allergy Doctors specialises in diagnosing and treating major types of allergies. But as he is a dermatologist consultant as well, he always finds himself accommodating patients with skin allergies.

Specifically speaking, he treats all classifications of eczema –  from the most commonly seen type (atopic eczema) to unclassifiable eczema. He uses the most common test, skin prick testing, to determine what type of allergy his clients have.

We learned from the reviews that he can be very accommodating in catering to an existing allergy diagnosis and treatment. This earned points from us as we believe quality like this significantly reflects their expertise.

Being Dr. Orton’s patient can also receive access to a private clinic as he also works in a couple of promising hospitals in the city. He is a consultant allergist at OneWelbeck Skin Health and Allergy and BMI Chiltern Hospital.

Booking an appointment with them, as we’ve heard, is easy as they have a booking form on their website. However, walk-in patients have complained about his secretarial team’s attitude toward them, which is, to be honest, a turn-off.

Fortunately, there is some good news when it comes to their rates, as we find their services to be reasonably priced. Plus, Dr. Orton is recognized by all the main private healthcare insurance companies, which is even more helpful to financially-troubled patients.

Pros

  • Over 40 years of experience
  • Treats a variety of allergy conditions
  • Impressive track record
  • Six consultant allergists available
  • Telephone consultation available
  • Treats life-threatening anaphylaxis

Cons

  • Minor complaints regarding admin error
  • Lack of information about their pricing structure

Thousands of patients from across the city (and beyond) have visited the London Allergy Clinic for allergy treatment. Given that they have over 40 years of experience, we’re not surprised by this solid track record at all.

The clinic employs six consultant allergists, all of whom have outstanding professional reputations. However, although we expected them to be operational every day based on their number, the clinic is only open on weekdays.

But availability isn’t much of an issue since clients can reach out to them via telephone consultations even outside business hours, given it is an emergency. Other than that, an appointment booking is required to get an initial consultation with them.

In terms of what the clinic can do, patients can expect diagnostic tests and treatment for a variety of allergy conditions. Treatments include desensitisation, symptomatic medication, Anti-IgE therapy, and many more.

They also offer emergency adrenaline pens to patients who are at risk of life-threatening anaphylaxis, which is a wonderful plus among their services. This is also why we consider this treatment to be their competitive advantage.

The only red flag we noticed was their lack of information about their pricing structure, though we’re relieved to hear that there hasn’t been any overpricing. There were also some reported admin errors, but otherwise, their overall service was fine.

Pros

  • General allergist
  • Mostly treats allergy rhinitis
  • Four practice locations in the city
  • Works in well-equipped facilities
  • Has many long-term allergy patients
  • Recognized by all major insurers
  • Practices within insurance guideline fees

Cons

  • Complaints of overpricing
  • No actual price structure available
  • Minor issues with booking of appointments

Most of Dr. Harsha Kariyawasam’s patients are kids and adults with allergic rhinitis. He is well reputable for treating such types of allergies as he is primarily a consultant in allergy and medical rhinology.

However, he can also handle other sorts of allergies as he’s a general allergist. This alone impressed us, but learning about all of his credentials (clinical and academic training, awards) justifies including them in this list.

Another thing we like about him is his availability – Dr. Kariyawasam currently has four practice locations spread throughout London. This is also how we know he can offer his patients accessible facilities equipped with the right technology.

Many of his long-term allergy patients stayed with him for years because of his simple yet effective treatments. On top of it all is the quality of care he provides to his patients, as well as the productive follow-ups he conducts.

We also appreciate the fact that he is recognized by all major insurers and practices within insurance guideline fees. However, we can’t help but be disappointed with minor issues regarding overpricing.

Some of the complaints are about him charging more than the consultation fee for manual examinations. They’re also said to have been charged extra for admin fees and room usage, which is a total letdown in general.

FAQs About Allergists in London

How should I prepare for an allergy appointment?

Aside from keeping a personal record, allergists advise patients to bring a complete list of any medications they have used or are currently using. In addition, any relevant medical documents (especially if they were hospitalised due to an allergic reaction) should be included.

What should I avoid prior to consulting an allergist?

Certain medications can interfere with the accuracy of an allergy test. Ask your doctor for a full list, but the most common are antihistamines.

This and other medications (as prescribed by your doctor) should not be taken seven days before allergy testing.

How long does it take to get an allergy test?

Normally, this exam takes 20 to 40 minutes. A few tests can identify allergic reactions that happen right away after being exposed to an allergen.

Other tests identify allergic reactions that develop gradually over several days.

Does taking an allergy test make me sick?

Itching and swelling at the test site are the most common reactions, and they usually go away after a few hours.

Itching of the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as a runny nose, wheezing, light-headedness, etc., are all possible side effects. Skin testing is the most-tolerated one.
