The 5 hematologists in London who lead in diagnostics and treatment

London is home to some of the world’s best doctors, and when it comes to hematology, that reputation holds strong. Blood disorders require precise diagnosis, monitoring, and effective treatments – the right specialist will provide all these and more.

We spoke to patients, interviewed medical professionals, and reviewed credentials. And yes, we also paid attention to the little things: how well they listen, if they respond fast, and whether they treat patients with warmth and empathy.

After plenty of meetings and spirited debates, we were able to round out our list. If you’re looking for the kind of care that makes even the complex conditions easier to face, these are the best hematologists in London that you have to know about.

How much does it cost to see a hematologist in London?

The cost of seeing a hematologist in London ranges from £200 to £300 for a private, initial consultation. Follow-up prices are usually cheaper, but this still varies widely depending on the provider and the additional tests necessary.

How we chose the best hematologists in London

Qualifications and clinical experience: We looked into each hematologist’s academic background, professional training, and accreditations. We also considered their years of practical experience treating blood-related disorders.

Quality of patient care: We gathered patient testimonials to understand how each hematologist approached bedside care. We opted for those who make patients feel respected and supported at every stage.

Diagnostic and treatment options: We evaluated the equipment and technology available at the clinics where the doctors practised. We took note of this to ensure patients receive well-rounded care under one roof.

Fees and payments: We assessed the typical consultation costs and treatment prices to gauge the value for money of each option. We preferred options that ensure fair and clear prices, as well as those with various payment options.

1. Dr Jiri Pavlu,

dr-jiri-pavlu

Location: 72 Du Cane Rd

Contact: +44 78677 55026

Website

Dr. Pavlu is a specialist in stem cell transplantation. This makes him an ideal choice for aggressive, relapsed, and difficult-to-treat leukemia cases.

We also liked that he offers services across many prestigious London locations, like Cromwell Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital.

Emphasizing this expertise is his ability to diagnose conditions thoroughly. In one example, he was able to take bone marrow biopsies, perform the test, and communicate the results within 48 hours.

On top of this, we find him compassionate and patient-centred as well. Every step is explained clearly, with clients telling us that they had plenty of room to ask questions and build expectations on treatment plans.

Communication is also a solid factor. Available through email and phone, he and his staff are able to respond promptly to patient concerns, even for general questions outside of consultations.

However, compared to NHS-only care, the consultations here are relatively more expensive – not to mention the fact that it can be difficult to book an appointment for new patients.

Pros

  • Hematologist with international training
  • Specialises in difficult-to-treat cases
  • Rapid, accurate diagnoses
  • Compassionate and friendly
  • Multiple prestigious hospital affiliations
  • Quick communication via phone or email
  • Thorough consultations

Cons

  • Relatively pricier fees
  • Can be difficult to book an appointment

Extremely approachable

“Having been under Dr. Pavlu’s care for a while now I can’t recommend him highly enough. He is an original thinker who takes the time to explain each part of the treatment to his patients. Additionally, he is extremely approachable and one always feel well informed following each consultation.  Dr. Jiri Pavlu and his team quite literally saved my life!!”

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Dr. Mehra has 21 years of experience. He specialises in complex conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, bone marrow failure, and myeloproliferative disorders.

He also has advanced expertise in both autologous and allogeneic transplants (bone marrow and stem cells).

We find his diagnostic ability to be exceptional. He is able to identify rare conditions quickly through extensive blood testing. Patients also said he is hands-on and thorough, allowing for data-driven, tailored treatment plans.

As for convenience, we absolutely appreciate that he offers both in-person and virtual consultations. In both settings, he listens carefully and offers multiple, viable treatments to manage the condition.

Pricing, while relatively expensive, is transparent. Initial consultations start at £325, while follow-ups cost £250. It’s slightly above the city’s average costs, though patients we interviewed assured us that they received value for their money.

Dr. Mehra’s expertise leans toward complex hematology and oncology. And while that doesn’t limit him from accommodating minor concerns, patients may find another doctor better suited to their general needs at a much lower cost.

Pros

  • Over 2 decades of experience
  • Expertise in CAR-T therapy
  • Specialises in autoimmune condition transplants
  • Excellent communication
  • Offers virtual consultations
  • Locations in Central and South London
  • Speaks both English and Urdu
  • In-depth consultations

Cons

  • May not be ideal for general conditions
  • Relatively pricier fees

Brilliant and quick diagnoses

“I particularly appreciate Dr Mehra’s brilliant diagnostic skills as he worked out a condition I have, that untreated, could have had terrible consequences. He immediately organised extensive blood tests that are not normally done, which reveled the condition and quickly made the results available to me”

Location: 1 Westferry Circus

Contact: +44 20 7039 3515

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Website

Dr. Gupta has 25 years of experience in a broad range of conditions, including anaemia and clotting disorders. He also has expertise in complex cancers such as lymphoma, myeloma, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

We like that he offers both inpatient and outpatient treatments, including chemotherapy and iron infusions. He also does advanced therapies such as CAR-T and immune thrombocytopenic purpura management.

His responsiveness and medical efficiency are also worth noting. In fact, we received various reports of him accommodating urgent iron infusions and late-night consultations in cases when time was critical.

Consultation fees are transparent and competitive at £275 for the first consultation and £250 for the follow-ups. For patients looking for a more accessible option, this makes him a great choice.

The only area we want to see improvements in is in their follow-up support – a few patients told us that they felt that follow-through was lacking. He’s also a bit more “brisk” with communication, which may appear less warm to others.

Pros

  • Over 2 decades of experience
  • Specialises in common and complex conditions
  • Transparent and fair consultation fees
  • Can arrange urgent, last-minute treatments
  • Holds senior leadership roles in NHS
  • Holistic outlook on patient care
  • Offers advanced therapies
  • Speaks English and Urdu

Cons

  • Need better follow-up support
  • Communication style may not suit all patients

Prompt, efficient, and thorough

“Dr. Gupta was very prompt in responding to my request for an iron infusion, which was necessary for me to have before I underwent a procedure. He offered an online consultation on the very same day we first spoke and arranged the infusion for Monday which most other clinics had deemed impossible. Really efficient and thorough. Thank you.”
