So you’ve got a business and are looking to comply with the tax authority? Do you need audits, or is there a tax dispute you’re eager to solve?

Tax matters can be a real headache, and it’s something that’s more than just an “accountant” thing. It’s actually a legal concern you should keep an eye on, especially since no one wants to be haunted by the revenue and customs authority.

To help you, our Wunderlust team has listed the best tax lawyers in London. So take your time and see these trusted firms that can help you with your tax concerns, be it personal or corporate.

How much do tax lawyers charge?

Tax lawyers charge from £300 per hour, depending on the solicitor’s level and the complexity of your case. Some lawyers charge a fixed fee for particular cases, like filing tax returns. The final amount is the combination of the professional fee and VAT.

How we chose

  • Experience in tax law: We selected solicitors who have years of experience in taxation, including giving tax advice, drafting legal documents, and resolving tax disputes.
  • Expertise in corporate and personal tax planning: We focused on law firms that help individuals and businesses settle their tax concerns.
  • Experience in HMRC dispute resolution:  We reviewed legal professionals who perform alternative dispute resolution in HMRC to avoid costly litigation as much as possible.
  • Pricing: We picked tax solicitors with reasonable fees matching their qualifications and years of experience in taxation.

The firm prepares filings and gives advice to clients who aren’t sure of their tax situation. We think it’s perfect for first-time tax preparers, just like what they did for a client who just opened up a new business.

We also heard from a client that Dr Frank had very entertaining humour while handling her diverse tax work. For us, it’s nice to have that kind of solicitor beside us who can make the situation less stressful.

Learning from their clients that they’re responsive is good news since we value timely updates. It’s also important for those who need urgent legal assistance. We also think that their proactive advice helps client anticipate future challenges in their business.

In fact, a client said that he’s with this firm because of Dr Frank’s great advice regarding taxes. For us, it’s not just about numbers but about crafting strategies that really align with your financial goals.

The not-so-good news is that they’re not always available due to their small workforce.

  • Responsive staff
  • Strategic tax advisory

Cons

  • Not always available

Hammad Baig is a self-employed barrister expert in commercial litigation, national and international VAT, and customs excise law. He’s practising at the 33 Bedford Row Chambers and is also a blog writer about VAT, which proves his authority in taxation.

What we like about Hammad is that he handles local and cross-border tax matters. He offers a hassle-free service for those who are abroad and need legal support regarding taxation.

A client shared that Hammad helped him handle his complex international tax case. For us, it’s refreshing to see that a solo attorney can handle intricate international issues. It speaks to his capability and skills.

Another client also commended Hammad for assisting him with his challenging customs and excise dispute concerning HMRC. As much as possible, we don’t want our cases to be escalated to court, so Hammad’s strategic defence in cases like this is nice to have.

Most clients are also satisfied with how Hammad explains every legal term and process in the easiest way possible. In our opinion, it is really important so we can understand what’s happening with our case (gives us peace of mind, too).

Work ethics? Great. Service is of high quality as well. The only thing to note is that Hammad Baig can be very busy since he’s self-employed and in demand.

Pros

  • Barrister expert in local and international taxation
  • Reputable in the legal industry
  • Experienced in handling HMRC disputes
  • Excellent communication

Jaffe & Co is a family-owned firm serving individual clients for over 40 years. They cater to UK and US tax issues and know the ins and outs of the IRS and HMRC. This is a good thing for those who have US tax matters.

For their UK tax services, they support mostly personal taxation. One of their clients has been with them for five years for her tax return preparation and filing. The fact that the client stayed for years means they’re reliable and worthy of that long-term trust.

We also appreciate how they’re reachable via phone, leading to quick response times on cases and concerns. For us, this is crucial, especially if your tax matters need urgent attention.

A great example is a dual citizenship holder client who had trouble with his delinquent tax. The firm acted promptly, beating the due date and avoiding penalties. We like that swift service as it can save time and, of course, money.

Pricing? Their minimum fee for UK tax starts at £775 plus VAT. However, if your case has a mix of US tax, the fee starts at £850.

The price is a bit higher compared to other lawyers. But for us, it’s reasonable enough, especially if you have US-related issues.

Pros

  • Years of experience in tax law
  • Caters to UK and US taxation
  • Entertains expat clients
  • Professional and supportive partners
  • Excellent communication
  • Responsive and competitive

Cons

  • Small team
  • Expensive fees

Helpful and polite

“I’ve used Jaffe & Co for five years now. Every year – regardless of any questions I might have, no matter how inane or small – the team are incredibly helpful, polite and reassuring. Dealing with taxes as an expat is stressful, but Jaffe & Co take the sting away. I cannot recommend them enough.”

-Ms. Jackie Reddy, Google Review

Thorough and efficient

“Their reputation as best in the business is absolutely deserved. They helped me sort out my tax situation arising from a US-based investment that I found utterly overwhelming and complex. They took all of the stress out of the situation and explained everything far better than my US-based accountant. They prepare everything with incredible thoroughness and efficiency – you know everything is in hand with this firm. Igor Bobov has been absolutely fantastic.”

Composed of a barrister, senior tax partner, and tax advisers, Churchill Tax Investigation London is a solid choice for anyone dealing with tax inspections and evasion cases.

A client mentioned Muhammad for taking care of his tax returns, which were submitted incorrectly by his previous agency. We think that it proves that the team offers an effective solution in cleaning up messy tax situations.

The team is also experienced in handling HMRC-related cases. We heard that they assisted a client who’s been under an HMRC investigation for 13 years. The fact that they ended a long-running case means they’re persistent and skilled tax professionals.

Most clients honestly say that the service isn’t cheap. But upon hearing those stories, we can say it’s a reasonable price for getting smooth resolutions and having a responsive team.

However, truth be told, the team is very limited. They only have one barrister, one senior tax partner, and some associates, which could affect their availability.

Pros

  • Experienced in HMRC cases
  • Experienced in tax investigations
  • Professional and supportive
  • Great communication
  • Handles tax tribunal and evasion cases

Cons

  • Very limited workforce
  • Can be expensive

Excellent team

I can highly recommend Sohaib Ahmed and Mike Walden. They did an excellent job in helping me with my historic tax returns which, despite professional assistance from another firm, and been filed incorrectly. The communication with Sohaib and Mike was effortless, and their charges very reasonable.”

-Mr. Mark Luscombe, Google Review

Professional and knowledgeable

“I had a challenging issue with my tax returns with HMRC. I am pleased to say that the team at Churchill did an amazing job in sorting out this issue for me. Very grateful for the professional and knowledgeable response from the team- many thanks Ash & Imad!”

5. Francis Wilks & Jones

Operating Hours: Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM

Francis Wilks & Jones is another reputable law firm focused on helping directors, business owners, and individuals. Their services range from debt recovery, bankruptcy help, and taxation.

We like that they cater to HMRC cases, which is not always offered by other firms. One instance is when the firm appealed a false R&D claim launched by HMRC. Their speciality in HMRC cases sets them apart from the others.

Aside from that, we also like the team’s inclusivity regardless of their client and the complexity of the task. They handle HMRC compliance checks, which might be a simple task that other firms won’t even dare to look at.

We’ve also asked how the team communicate and many shared that they’re direct to the point, less term complexity. In our opinion, this is a big deal since not all have the time to learn taxation and its laws.

The only downside of this firm is its backlog in communication. They aren’t that responsive to emails, as some of their clients mentioned. We’d prefer responsive solicitors to feel confident in our case.

Pros

  • Reputable firm
  • Focused on finance, bankruptcy, and taxation services
  • Experienced in handling HMRC cases
  • Supportive and professional
  • Direct to the point

Cons

  • Can be unresponsive to emails

Approachable and knowledgeable

“Andy Lynch and Lefteris Kalluo @FWJ dealt withana HMRC compliance check. Cannot recommend them enough, approachable, Knowledgeable, professional and above all else got the desired result. Will not hesitate in dealing with them again if required.”

-Mr. Trevor Worthington, Google Review

Calm and practical

“Andy Lynch is outstanding. Dealt with an R&D tax query at a time of great stress for me due to a recent bereavement. Clear, calm, practical advice delivered with compassion and action. Quite simply, heaven sent. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”
