Founded by Matthew Crawford and Zoë Candlin, After Noah is a treasure trove in London that’s been around since 1990. That said, their team’s skills go way back to a family tradition from 1938, so you can be assured they know their stuff.

Plus, they’re not your typical furniture shop; they’re a half-store, half-restoration workshop. This unique set-up certainly adds to their charm.

When we visited, we were impressed by the attention to detail in their workshop. They handle everything from French polishing and carving to upholstery and caning.

Whether you’re buying or restoring, each piece gets meticulous care to keep its character intact.

We loved the idea of their free, no-obligation estimates; just send them a photo of your piece, and they’ll get back to you.

However, we did run into a slightly cold receptionist, damping the welcoming vibe a bit. But all in all, After Noah’s passion for craftsmanship really shows.

Pros

  • Years of experience
  • Unique product range
  • Expert craftsmanship
  • Convenient estimates

Cons

  • Occasional customer service issues

Leaves customers impressed with quality results

“Matthew and his team did a great job restoring two old Ercol chairs – mending broken leg, tightening all joints and hand-stripping and polishing. I had efficient and pleasant communications throughout the estimate, delivery and pick-up stages and am very pleased with the results. I’ll be back with other chairs and recommend them highly. Thank you Matthew.”

Restores vintage chairs with remarkable craftsmanship

“Just received my chair back from the workshop and we’re blown away by the craftsmanship. It was a beautiful vintage chair to start but an overenthusiastic dinner guest decimated the paper cord seat. Matthew and the team were personable and knowledgable, kept us informed throughout, and drop off and collection was made very easy. Thanks to the team it’s back at the table, pretty, strong and looking forward to more bums on its seat!”

Furniture Restorers in London Ltd has been bringing well-loved furniture back to life for over 40 years, and we can see why they’re so trusted.

When we checked out their workshop, it was clear just how dedicated they are to their craft.

Their team isn’t just about quick fixes; they go all-in with traditional techniques like French polishing and custom cabinet making. It really brings out the character in each piece.

We even got to see some before-and-after examples, and it was hard not to be impressed by the transformation.

One of the things we liked most was how they balance old-school methods with modern tools, making sure the results are not only beautiful but built to last.

Their online gallery gives a sneak peek at some of their recent projects—worth a look if you’re considering a restoration yourself.

They’re a popular choice, so if you’re thinking of booking them, we’d suggest reaching out sooner rather than later.

Cons

Carefully tests and adjusts repairs to ensure lasting quality

“5 star, I cannot recommend highly enough. Winston fixed my sofa leg and a broken bed. He was easy to book, upfront, clear and reasonable on pricing. He explained the issue and how he would fix it. I was very impressed and thrilled with his work. He saved me thousands in new furniture. He also tests his work to ensure he has properly fixed it. He fixed the bed, tested it, it snapped again, so he readjusted the fix and added more support. He also advised on better purchases or a longer term fix. I wouldn’t hesitate to call him again.”

Kennington Upholstery Ltd caught our eye with their approach to upholstery. There’s a sense that every piece they handle has its own story, and they’re here to help tell it.

We even saw their team diving into various projects like restoring classic vintage furniture and crafting custom pieces from scratch.

It was refreshing to see a team that doesn’t just stick to one style but seamlessly blends traditional and modern techniques.

We also chatted with a few of their clients who couldn’t help but share their positive experiences. Many highlighted how smoothly the entire process went, from the first consultation to the final reveal.

We especially liked their free sample service, which lets you get a feel for the materials before committing. However, a couple of people did mention some delays with sample deliveries.

Adds convenience with reliable pick-up and delivery options

“Had a pair of wingback chairs reupholstered and absolutely love how they turned out. Requested quotes from several places in and around London and Kennington was the best value by far. Communication was great, they were very responsive and kept me informed along the way. I opted to include pick up and delivery and the driver was prompt and professional. Would absolutely recommend!”

“We used Kennington Upholstery to change the fabric on 2 vintage chairs that had been upholstered in pleather. They were clear on costs, purchased the fabric for us for delivery to them for ease & worked very quickly. We will now have the chairs french polished. “I am very pleased with the repairs Arshad made to my much loved 1980s dining chairs. It was a tricky job and I appreciated the way he explained what he was planning to do to each item. Revitalises cherished heirlooms with exceptional craftsmanship

“We are so lucky to have discovered Barrdale Furniture Restoration. My father-in-law passed away last year and left us a wonderful chair with claw feet and a distressed rattan seat which hadn’t been polished for over 16 years. From the get go Dale Brooks and his team have been more than phenomenal sending me photos at each stage in the restoration and delivering on time. The result was beyond our wildest dreams! I am in the process of finding loads more furniture for them to restore.”

Keeps clients informed with regular updates

I recently asked Barrdale Harrogate to restore two pieces of Nathan Furniture that had belonged to my recently deceased Father in Law so were of particular sentimental value to us. They were delivered back to us today and I cannot fault Dale and his team at all, from the updates and contact I received throughout the process, to the standard of service. I am delighted with my furniture and cannot recommend Barrdale highly enough. A superb service
